Mountaintop removal (MTR) is a radical form of strip mining for coal that blasts away mountains and devastates the environment and communities of Appalachia. Economic poverty, poor health, rampant cancer and political disenfranchisement plague mountain communities and this destructive practice perpetuates them. MTR is responsible for the loss of over 500 mountains in Appalachia and over 2,000 miles of streams have been buried. The metals released from exposed coal seams at mine sites makes the land and human communities sick, and destroys opportunities for local land-based farming and foraging economies.
